Therapy Shouldn't Feel Out of Reach
If you've looked into therapy in Calgary or Edmonton lately, you already know: the cost is prohibitive, the waitlists are long, and the idea of starting over with someone new every few months is exhausting. Individual sessions typically run $150–$200 per hour, and most extended benefits plans cover a fraction of that. So a lot of Albertans do what makes sense under the circumstances: they wait, they push through, or they quietly give up on the idea altogether. But waiting doesn't make anxiety easier to manage. It doesn't make depression lift faster, or postpartum isolation feel less heavy. And the longer you wait, the harder it becomes to take that first step.
You deserve consistent support, not just when your schedule and budget happen to align.
What Is Virtual Group Therapy?
Group therapy is a structured, therapist-led approach where a small group of people work on shared challenges together using evidence-based techniques like CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy).
It's not a support group or open sharing circle. At Ummah Support Services (USS), every group follows a clear curriculum, guided by a registered therapist. You build real skills — for managing anxiety, regulating emotions, navigating relationships, or postpartum recovery — in a confidential, professionally facilitated setting.
For many people, group therapy produces better outcomes than individual sessions, particularly when skill-building and peer accountability are part of the process.
How Ummah Support Services Works
USS was founded by Taskeen Baig, MSW RSW, to make evidence-based psychotherapy accessible to people who've been priced out of traditional care. Taskeen brings specialized training in CBT, DBT, and group facilitation, including Sanyas training in Indigenous anti-racism, and has built USS specifically to serve communities that are often underserved by mainstream mental health services — including BIPOC, Muslim, South Asian, newcomer, and postpartum communities.
The model is a monthly subscription at $150/month. For that, you attend structured virtual group sessions throughout the month — the equivalent of six hours of therapy for what you'd typically pay for a single individual session.
USS's Alberta groups currently include:
- CBT Skills Group and DBT Skills Group (anxiety, depression, emotional regulation)
- Aware Partner and Aware Partner Neurodivergent (relationships and attachment)
- Aware Parent and Aware Parent Neurodivergent (parenting)
- Postpartum Support Groups for moms and dads

What Changes When You Have Consistent Support
Getting the right help — consistently, affordably — creates a kind of momentum that occasional individual sessions rarely do. Members in USS groups report:
- Fewer anxiety spirals and more confidence managing difficult emotions day-to-day
- Feeling less isolated and more understood, particularly within communities that have limited culturally competent options
- Concrete CBT and DBT skills that carry into their relationships, parenting, and work
At $150/month, it's therapy that actually fits into your life — not something you're constantly trying to justify.
Frequently Asked Questions About Group Therapy in Alberta
Yes. Research consistently shows that virtual delivery is equally effective for most mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression. All USS groups are facilitated live by a registered therapist using the same evidence-based protocols as in-person care.
USS groups are clinically structured programs, not peer-led support circles. Every session follows a CBT or DBT curriculum, facilitated by Taskeen Baig, MSW RSW. You're developing skills under professional guidance, not just sharing experiences.
Absolutely. Our groups are fully virtual, which means anyone in Alberta can join regardless of whether they're in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, or a rural area. All you need is a device and a private space.
You get access to three groups a month and all of the sessions that occur that month for each group you have chosen.
Groups are kept small to ensure everyone has time to participate and receive attention. Typical group size is 6 to 10 participants.
